05 Elk Trip Summay by The Chairman

It was a bizarre day at Elk Mountain for the Wissahickon Ski Clubs annual bus trip. We started  the day in beautiful spring like conditions; sunshine and 40 degrees. The lift operator was wearing just a T shirt! I mentioned that I would like to see it cloud up so the sun wouldn't melt the snow. Sure enough, by 10 o'clock the clouds came over. Perfect! By 10:30 a little rain started to fall, but not enough to bother us. By 11 o'clock it was raining much harder and the top of the mountain was covered with fog, making it very hard to see. Not seeing any skiers, my son and I decided to go in for lunch at 11:30. Everyone was sitting in the lodge, wet clothes all over the place. My son and I go into the cafe for lunch and are joined by Jane who says that most of the crowd thinks we should call it a day and go home. By the time we finish our lunch, it's SNOWING! Not just a little snow flurry, but blizzard snow. Everyone puts their wet stuff back on and out we go. The morning slush was now frozen and being covered by new snow, making it very difficult to ski. But ski we did until it was time to head for the bar and have a few beers. The bus ride home was normal; plenty of food and drink and lots of noise from the rowdies in the back of the bus.  All and all, a great day.      Webbie
